1. Suitable for beginners - These plants should do well in most aquariums. Fertilizer is not vital and most water conditions, including harder water, are suitable for them. Flourescent lighting will be adequate. To ensure good health, use CO2.

2. Harder and adaptable - These plants will do well in most conditions, but some species may need brighter lighting. Provide CO2 and fertilizer. Propagation should be easy. Soft water is best, but if adequate CO2 is used, the plants should do well in harder water.

3. More challenging - These plants will need bright light, regular fertilization, CO2, and a good quality substrate. Propagation may be difficut and the plants may take time to become established. Generally speaking, they will do better in softer water.

4. Difficult to care for and propagate - These plants must have strong lighting (use alternative flourescent tubes, such as metal-halide and mercury vapor lamps). Provide a good-quaity, iron-rich substrate, regular fertilizer, and CO2 for best results.
